Port Authority Releases First Quarter 2009 Report On World Trade Center Interim Milestones

New York, NY – May 4, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — The Port Authority today released a report detailing the progress it has made through the first quarter of 2009 to achieve rebuilding milestones at the World Trade Center site and looking ahead to milestones for the second quarter. Milestones for the first quarter included a contract award for 22,000 tons of steel for the World Trade Center Transportation Hub, the installation of more than half of the 4,550 pieces of steel for the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, and the start of construction on the Vehicle Security Center.

The report, which can be found at www.wtcprogress.com said that seven of the eight major milestones have been completed on schedule. The remaining milestone – the completion of pavilion/spot network footings that will support the Memorial’s Pavilion – was completed on April 24th. The report outlines 20 more milestones for the next quarter.

World Trade Center The first quarter of 2009 also saw the signing of the first least for One World Trade Center with Vantone Industrial Co. to create the China Center, a 190,810-square-foot business and cultural facility.

The major milestones were established as part of the World Trade Center Assessment, a comprehensive review of all of the major public projects on the World Trade Center site. It was released last October. The Port Authority has since been issuing quarterly reports to update the public on the rebuilding progress.

Port Authority Chairman Anthony R. Coscia said, “Today’s report is in keeping with the Port Authority’s commitment to be transparent and accountable in the rebuilding effort. As the report shows, we’ve made significant progress on the site’s public projects in the last three months. We’ll continue to work hard in tackling the challenges in the days ahead.”

Port Authority Executive Director Chris Ward said, “This report shows tangible progress being made on all of the public projects throughout the site. But we have many more milestones to hit, and we must continue working aggressively to meet every single one of them.”

The major milestones achieved by the Port Authority are:

World Trade Center Transportation Hub:

  • Steel contract award.
  • Complete south mezzanine steel.
  • Substantial completion of the Pavilion/spot network footings.

National September 11 Memorial & Museum:

  • Remove temporary ramp.
  • Complete Pavilion cladding design.

Vehicle Security Center and Tour Bus Parking Facility:

  • Start West Street slurry wall.

One World Trade Center:

  • Begin Fulton Street deck.

Greenwich Street:

  • Complete top-down underpinning design.

In addition to meeting these construction milestones, in the past quarter the Port Authority also achieved the following:

  • Placed more than 9,000 cubic yards of concrete throughout the site this past quarter, enough to make a sidewalk 50 miles long.
  • Installed more than 2,800 tons of steel this past quarter – equivalent to the skeleton of a 15-story office building or the weight of 10 Statues of Liberty.
  • Completed the steel framing for the north pool of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center.
  • Installed structural steel on One World Trade Center that brought the building to 105 feet above street level.
  • Completed installation of more than 50 percent of the steel for the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.
  • Jumped a World Trade Center tower crane to 189 feet above street level.
  • Excavated more than 74,000 cubic yards of soil and rock from beneath the No. 1 subway structure.

Prospective, 2nd Quarter 2009 milestones:

World Trade Center Transportation Hub

  • Begin 9A underpass excavation for East-West Connector.
  • Complete concrete placement on sections 1, 2, and 3 of the Fulton Street deck.
  • Bid out early-action work packages to support steel erection.
  • Complete fabrication of the remaining Calatrava arches for the East-West Connector.
  • Take PATH platform A and Tracks 1 and 2 out of service.

National September 11 Memorial & Museum

  • Complete Pavilion Interior Design.
  • Complete approximately half of Sector 3A steel over PATH line.
  • Complete Sector 4 steel.
  • Turn over Sectors 2 and 3 steel to the concrete subcontractor.
  • Begin concrete operations on interior of Memorial.
  • Activate north lift complex and install south lift complex.

One World Trade Center

  • Complete north core shear wall to B-1.
  • South core crane jump.
  • Finish concrete placement on the No. 2 – auxiliary shear wall.
  • Complete first three sections of cutback of the Vesey Street deck.

World Trade Center Vehicle Security Center and Tour Bus Parking Facility

  • Complete slurry panels 1-4 and 8.
  • Assemble and activate slurry plant.
  • Complete trenching and installation of buttress guide walls.

Greenwich Street

  • Complete phase 1 excavation and bracing.
  • Top-down contract for Greenwich Street out to bid.
