Turner Completes Largest Green Roof in New York City

Roof atop the United States Postal Service Morgan Mail Processing Facility is Part of the USPS’s Goal to Reduce Energy Usage by 30 Percent by 2015

New York, N.Y. – August 25, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — Turner Construction Company, the nation’s largest green builder, has substantially completed New York City’s largest green roof for the United States Postal Service (USPS) atop the 2.2 million sq. ft. Morgan Mail Processing Facility on West 28th Street between 9th and 10th Avenues.

The scope of work included the installation of plants and grasses and fourteen wood benches made from lumber certified sustainable by the Forest Stewardship Council. The roof will reduce storm water runoff and will save the USPS $30,000 each year on heating and cooling costs.

The 2.5 acre green roof is part of the USPS’s greener facilities strategy and will help the agency achieve its goal of reducing energy use by 30 percent by 2015. To further support the Post Office’s greener facilities strategy, Turner replaced more than 2,000 windows and installed more than 50 air handler units. Turner also managed the interior fit-outs on the seventh and eighth floors in the facility, to improve the energy efficiency of the Morgan Mail Processing Facility.

“Turner is proud to help the USPS achieve its energy efficiency goals. Green retrofits of existing facilities are an important component of our client’s Green building programs,” said Charles Murphy, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Turner’s New York operations.
