Tenants & Neighbors and Assemblymember Rosenthal To Hold Rally and Press Conference at November 10 MBR Hearing

Rosenthal: RGB Should Determine Rent Adjustments for
Rent-Controlled Tenants

New York, NY – November 10, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — On Thursday, November 10, 2011 at 10:00 AM the New York State Tenants & Neighbors Coalition, Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal, allied elected officials and rent-controlled tenants from across New York City will hold a rally and press conference at 22 Reade Street, outside the biennial Maximum Base Rent hearing, at which the adjustment to the Maximum Base Rent for the city’s approximately 40,000 rent-controlled households will be determined.

The group will release a white paper entitled “Rents are out of Control,” which highlights the affordability crisis faced by many of New York’s rent-controlled tenants, most of whom are senior citizens on a fixed income.

This action is part of a campaign organized by the New York State Tenants & Neighbors Coalition to urge the state legislature to pass a bill introduced by Assemblymember Rosenthal (A.1892), which would eliminate the Maximum Base Rent System and instead have the Rent Guidelines Board, which determines increases for the City’s one million rent-stabilized households, determine what the rent adjustments should be for those rent-controlled tenants whose landlords are entitled to collect an increase.
