SCHUMER ANNOUNCES MORE THAN $1.1 MILLION IN RENTAL ASSISTANCE FOR OVER 100 HOMELESS VETERANS IN NEW YORK CITY

WASHINGTON, D.C. – November 10, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer today announced more than $1.1 million in federal U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) vouchers for public housing agencies in New York City that have agreed to provide rental assistance to in-need veterans. The HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program combines Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) rental assistance for homeless veterans with case management and clinical services provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Specifically, $590,957 in HUD-VASH project-based vouchers will go to the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) and $579,240 in HUD-VASH project-based vouchers for the New York Housing Preservation and Development. Schumer said that according to HUD, there were 1,645 homeless veterans in the New York City area last year. Schumer explained that these HUD-VASH project-based vouchers will help provide much-needed rental assistance to at-risk veterans in the New York City area.

Overall, HUD is providing approximately $6.5 million to 27 local public housing agencies that will support 821 units. In New York City, HUD has awarded 56 project-based vouchers to NYCHA and 45 project-based vouchers to the New York Housing Preservation and Development. James A. Peters VA Medical Center is the partnering VA medical facility providing case management and clinical services.
