WASHINGTON, D.C. – (RealEstateRama) — Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced more than $25 million has been awarded for seven supportive housing projects that will create 286 units of supportive housing for homeless and low-income New Yorkers, including veterans, adults recovering from substance abuse and those living with disabling mental health conditions.
“This funding will help ensure that some of the most vulnerable New Yorkers have a safe place to call home,” said Governor Cuomo. “Supportive housing is crucial to helping these individuals overcome institutional and societal barriers and achieve greater independence. I am proud to be making this crucial investment to build stronger communities across the state.”
The awards include $3 million from the Governor’s Medicaid Redesign Team, allocated to the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance for the development of housing projects targeted specifically to homeless persons with disabilities who are also high-cost users of Medicaid.
The funds were awarded through the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance’s Homeless Housing and Assistance Program and will support projects in the Bronx and Brooklyn, as well as in Franklin, Onondaga, Westchester and Yates counties.

New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance Commissioner Samuel D. Roberts said, “Governor Cuomo is committed to a multi-faceted approach to addressing homelessness in New York State and projects like this play a vital role by providing safe, affordable places to live. Supportive housing also ensures that residents have the tools required to stabilize their lives and avoid a relapse into homelessness.”
The Homeless Housing and Assistance Program provides capital funding to develop housing for various special-needs populations that is designed to help families and individuals move out of homelessness and poverty, toward the highest level of independence possible. It awarded more than $60 million, plus an additional $10 million in Medicaid Redesign funding, during the 2015-16 state fiscal year to 19 projects across the state, which will develop more than 800 units of emergency, transitional and permanent supportive housing.
The 2016-17 Enacted Budget that Governor Cuomo signed into law includes $20 billion over five years for a comprehensive statewide housing and homelessness action plan.
The $10 billion housing plan boosts state spending on housing programs by nearly $5 billion and will create and preserve 100,000 affordable housing units across the state, along with supporting services for New Yorkers seeking affordable housing. This program builds on the achievements in affordable housing preservation and construction over the past five years, including the creation of the Tenant Protection Unit, which has returned more than 50,000 housing units to rent regulation, and the $1 billion House NY initiative.
The $10 billion homelessness action plan will support the creation of 6,000 new supportive housing beds, 1,000 emergency beds, and a variety of expanded homelessness services over the next five years. Over 15 years, the state will add 20,000 new units that will build upon 44,000 existing supportive housing units that the state already funds. This investment marks the largest commitment to addressing homelessness in New York State history.
