Senator Hoylman Statement on Proposed Demolition of Landmark-Eligible East Village Apartment Buildings

WASHINGTON, D.C. — (RealEstateRama) — “This is an increasingly common story that goes to the heart of the on-going fight across Manhattan to preserve historic buildings, not only for the sake of neighborhood character, but also because they often contain affordable, rent-regulated units.”

State Senator Brad Hoylman (D-Manhattan) attended a rally sponsored by the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation (GVSHP) protesting the proposed demolition of 112-120 East 11th Street, five landmark-eligible buildings located just across the street from Webster Hall. In 2008 these buildings — which previously contained affordable units — were deemed eligible for inclusion in the East Village/Lower East Side Historic District, but were recently, without explanation, approved for demolition by the NYC Department of Buildings (DOB). Below is Senator Hoylman’s statement on the potential demolition of these historic buildings:

State Senator Brad Hoylman said: “It’s alarming and unacceptable that these historic buildings on 11th street, located at the epicenter of the East Village just across the street from Webster Hall, were deemed eligible for inclusion in the East Village/Lower East Side Historic District just eight years ago but today are being slated for demolition to make way for a trendy hotel. This is an increasingly common story that goes to the very heart of the on-going fight across Manhattan to preserve historic buildings, not only for the sake of neighborhood character, but also because they often contain affordable, rent-regulated units. I’ll be looking into how these units were removed from stabilization and will continue to work with GVSHP, HDC, the East Village Community Coalition and other stakeholders to ensure we get a full accounting of what happened here and why.”
