N.Y. POWER AUTHORITY RESTORES ELEVATOR SERVICE AT POPULAR FISHING PIER

LEWISTON – (RealEstateRama) — The New York Power Authority today announced it has opened a newly refurbished elevator that carries visitors to a fishing pier near the base of NYPA’s Robert Moses Niagara Power Plant, the Niagara Power Project’s main generating facility.

In addition to making it easier for anglers to get to the pier, the elevator provides disabled visitors and emergency personnel access to the fishing facilities, which include a 240-foot long platform, restrooms, a fish-cleaning station and parking.

“Anglers come from miles around to fish off the Power Authority’s pier, especially this time of year when the salmon are running,” said Gil C. Quiniones, NYPA president and CEO. “In addition to providing access to disabled visitors, the elevator also comes in handy when you need a little help bringing home your catch.”

Located at the foot of the plant’s South Access Road, the elevator travels down 40 feet to the pier. Cars are permitted to drop off passengers at a nearby turnaround, where there are several parking spaces for handicapped visitors. Additional parking is available up the access road, off Hyde Park Boulevard.

The original elevator, installed in 1990, had reached the end of its useful life. A comprehensive inspection and engineering study commissioned in 2014 recommended the elevator be replaced. During peak fishing season, the elevator is estimated to carry approximately 100 anglers a week who are out for salmon, rainbow trout and yellow perch.

The modernization project, which began in 2014, cost about $1.7 million. Scrufari Construction of Niagara Falls installed the elevator under a competitively bid contract.
