Brooklyn Navy Yard Receives High Performance Energy Efficiency Award from NYSERDA

NYSERDA Support for Energy Efficiency Project Helps Brooklyn Navy Yard Reduce Annual Costs by $24,000

New York, NY – February 13, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has awarded Brooklyn Navy Yard a High Performance Building Plaque for energy efficiency measures to the Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at Building 92 that will cut energy costs by $24,000 annually.

NYSERDA awards High Performance Building Plaques to hospitals, colleges and universities, schools, businesses and other organizations that construct or substantially renovate buildings that perform at least 30 percent above the New York State energy code. The Brooklyn Navy Yard Center is rated to perform 47 percent above code.

The Brooklyn Navy Yard Center located at 63 Flushing Avenue, was awarded $80,200 in support from NYSERDA which helps to offset the incremental cost of the energy efficient measures. The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation has completed construction of a substantial renovation of an existing 9,000 gross square foot building with a new 28,000 gross square foot addition, for a total of 37,000 gross square feet. The existing 9,000 gross square feet was converted into gallery space, and the new 28,000 gross square foot addition will serve as office space. The major energy efficiency measures at the facility include an energy efficient lighting design and geothermal HVAC system.

“The Brooklyn Navy Yard has made great strides to reduce its overall carbon footprint and set a new standard for industrial buildings,” said Andrew Kimball, President and CEO of the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation. “Having the stamp of approval for energy efficiency from NYSERDA, a leading voice in sustainability, further establishes the Navy Yard as a national model.”

“NYSERDA is pleased to be involved in an energy project with an institution that has such a rich history as the Brooklyn Navy Yard,” said Francis J. Murray Jr., President and CEO, NYSERDA. “Governor Cuomo has strongly supported large commercial and industrial customers undertaking energy efficiency measures in an effort to reduce their costs and make them more competitive. This project can serve as a model, especially for those customers that attract a large number of visitors like the Center, to make similar energy efficiency investments.”

Funding for this project is through NYSERDA’s New Construction Program (NCP), which provides technical support to design teams and financial incentives to building owners involved in the construction of new or substantially renovated structures in New York State. NCP is a first-come, first-served program available to commercial, institutional and industrial sector customers of certain utilities. NCP incentives are paid out upon project completion and installation of approved energy efficiency measures is verified. The intent of the program is not only to improve energy efficiency and green building practices, but to effect a permanent transformation in the way buildings are designed and constructed throughout the state.
