DHCR Announces Community Planning Grants to Support Local Planning Efforts

Albany, NY  – January 29, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) – Deborah VanAmerongen, commissioner of the state Division of Housing and Community Renewal (DHCR) announced nearly $500,000 in Community Planning grants to 23 municipalities in 19 counties around Upstate New York.

The grants were provided through the New York State Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. They are designed to help municipalities identify and prioritize community development needs and goals and create strategies to achieve them. Eligible communities were invited to submit applications for a 60/40 matching grant up to $25,000.

The grants can be used for a wide range of planning activities. Greene County, for example, will use a $25,000 grant to develop a Tourism Action Plan. The plan will examine the state of tourism, identify strategic investment opportunities and provide cost-benefit analysis for communities.

The Village of Clyde in Wayne County will develop a long term, regional water supply plan for the southeastern Wayne County which includes the towns of Lyons, Galen, Savannah, Butler, and Rose along with the villages of Newark, Lyons and Clyde. This proposed plan would take a regional approach to address local water concerns, help to consolidate efforts, assess shared services and create local government efficiencies.

The City of Oswego will use their $25,000 award to update its 2020 Vision Comprehensive Plan. The updated plan will include essential aspects of the community including economic development, waterfront preservation, historic asset preservation, and improvement of existing housing stock and sustainability policies. A large section of the City of Oswego downtown is a waterfront, so many of the same initiatives and strategies were incorporated into both the Local Waterfront Revitalization Plan and the 2020 Vision plan. This grant will help the county combine these two plans to create a manageable and unified waterfront/downtown area.
