Governor Cuomo Announces $4.4 Million to Construct, Rehabilitate and Repair 170 Owner-Occupied Homes Across New York

Washington, DC – (RealEstateRama) — Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced nearly $4.4 million in funds to construct, rehabilitate and improve the homes of 170 income-eligible families across New York. The funds are awarded through New York State Homes and Community Renewal’s Affordable Home Ownership Development Program, administered by the Affordable Housing Corporation. More than 8,800 homes under this administration have been created or made safer and more affordable with approximately $170 million in Affordable Housing Corporation awards.

“These smart investments strengthen communities across the state, while helping hardworking New Yorkers obtain and maintain the American Dream of homeownership,” Governor Cuomo said. “With this action, we are taking one more step toward ensuring that everyone has access to a safe, decent, and affordable place to call home.”

Homes and Community Renewal Commissioner James S. Rubin said, “Under Governor Cuomo’s leadership, we are committed to improving the lives of millions of New Yorkers who deserve safe and affordable homes. These funds will strengthen neighborhoods through much needed home improvement repairs and will help hard working families achieve the dream of homeownership.”

The awards announced today will make improvements to existing owner-occupied single or multi-family homes, condominiums, or cooperatives; acquire and rehabilitate owner-occupied homes for sale, including single and multi-family homes, condominiums, or cooperatives; and construct new owner-occupied homes for sale, including single and multi-family homes, condominiums, or cooperatives including replacing dilapidated mobile and manufactured homes.

Awards include a $999,000 grant to Habitat for Humanity of New York State to assist in the acquisition and rehabilitation of 27 affordable units, located throughout Erie, Niagara, Monroe, Genesee, Ontario, Onondaga, Chemung, Steuben and Orange Counties. AHC also awarded Habitat for Humanity of New York State another $973,000 to assist in the construction of 26 new affordable units, located throughout Erie, Niagara, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Seneca, Cortland, Onondaga, Broome, Columbia, Jefferson, Orange and Ulster Counties.

Additional awards announced today include:

Central New York

  • $875,000 to Empire Housing & Development Corporation to assist with the acquisition and rehabilitation of 35 units, to be located on scattered sites in Onondaga County.
  • $300,000 to Onondaga County Community Development Division to assist with the improvement of 45 units to be located on scattered sites in Onondaga County.

North Country

  • $450,000 grant to Neighbors of Watertown, Inc., to assist in the home improvement of 17 units, located on scattered sites in the City of Watertown, Jefferson County.

Long Island

  • $800,000 grant to Long Island Housing Partnership to assist in home improvement of 20 units located on scattered sites in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

The Affordable Home Ownership Development Program provides up to $40,000 per home to eligible municipalities, municipal housing authorities, and other not-for-profit and charitable organizations that develop affordable housing or assist homeowners in funding necessary repairs.
