Statement on City Council Approval of 126th Street African Burial Ground Memorial and Mixed-Use Development

New York, NY – (RealEstateRama) — The New York City Council today approved a zoning application for the development of a portion of land in East Harlem that was once the site of an African Burial Ground that dates back to the seventeenth century. The 126th Street African Burial Ground Memorial and Mixed-Use development will deliver a permanent memorial, deeply affordable housing and jobs for East Harlem residents.

The project will include:

  • A permanent outdoor public memorial that will be located on the historic footprint of the burial ground
  • An indoor cultural center that will provide educational programming
  • Approximately 1-million-square-feet of residential and commercial space
  • Approximately 80% of units in the project will be affordable, and at least half will target households with incomes ranging from extremely low to moderate

NYCEDC President and CEO James Patchett released the following statement after the City Council’s vote:

“Today’s City Council approval paves the way for NYCEDC to create a memorial that will honor the historic contribution of African-Americans to East Harlem and our city’s history, while also bringing much-needed affordable housing and jobs to the East Harlem community. We thank Speaker Mark-Viverito for her long-standing leadership on this project. We take our responsibilities here seriously and look forward to continuing our work with the Harlem African Burial Ground Task Force, Bus Depot Task Force, Community Board 11 and other community leaders to implement this meaningful project and continue to deliver for East Harlem residents.”
