OTDA Helps Open New Liberty Street Apartments in Binghamton
Albany, NY – July 2, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — The New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) recently helped celebrate the grand opening of Opportunity for Broome, Inc.’s new Liberty Street Apartments in Binghamton. The new facility will provide 12 units of permanent housing for homeless families and individuals. Opportunities for Broome (OFB) was awarded $2,212,540 in Homeless Housing Assistance Program (HHAP) funding by OTDA in 2007 to develop the project. OFB also received a Restore NY grant from the City of Binghamton to assist in the construction of the project. Additionally, the City of Binghamton was instrumental in providing needed green space for the project by demolishing an abandoned house next door and deeding that lot to OFB for use by this project. Operational funding for the project will be through H.U.D.’s Shelter+Care program with referrals coming from community based organizations as well as the Broome County Department of Social Services.
Scott Edwards, President of the Homeless Housing Assistance Corporation, spoke at the ceremony along with Mark Silvanic, OFB’s Executive Director, and Matt Ryan, the Mayor of Binghamton. Edwards noted the significance of HHAP funding in allowing OTDA to collaborate with many organizations like OFB and the City of Binghamton in order to advance the agency’s mission to provide housing, supports, and services to New York’s most vulnerable citizens and help them on the path to self-sufficiency.
