Alternative Grocery Store, Downtown Co-op, Now Open in Retail Space at Hamilton Square in Jersey City

Condo and Loft Development Welcomes Grocer as its Newest Retailer

Jersey City, NJ – January 19, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — SILVERMAN, the developers of Hamilton Square, a premier adaptive reuse and new construction development in the Hamilton Park neighborhood of Jersey City, today announced that a new grocery store committed to local, organic, and conscientious consumerism, Downtown Co-op (http://www.downtowncoop.com/) is now open.

Located at 29 McWilliams Place on the ground level of the new residential development Hamilton Square (http://www.livingonthepark.com/) Downtown Co-op was founded by a Jersey City family that saw a lack of healthful choices in the neighborhood and community.  It will offer a variety of foods that reflect the needs and interests of its members, specializing in produce, bread, dairy and meat all sourced from local, natural, fair-trade, and organic suppliers, when possible.

“Jersey City is a diverse, complex city and the average grocery store does not capture the depth of the complexity nor the need for consistent access to organic, sustainable foods,” said Mary Suliburk, founder of Downtown Co-op. “We will work with farmers, trusted distributors of organics, and through membership participation the Downtown Coop will be something different, something new, and something exciting.”

The membership cost for Downtown Co-op is a one-time joining fee of $100, and although members are not required to work at the store, non-working members will be charged an additional annual membership fee of $50.  Members will have a voice in how Downtown Co-op is run, organized, and product choice, as well as receiving a discount on purchases.  Members will also have the opportunity to participate in farm visits, have access to the store’s planned community garden, and participate in community events.  Non-members will also have access to all store products, but only at full retail price.

Hamilton Square’s retail spaces include a total of 13 unique businesses including Antheia Floral Design, Hamilton Health and Fitness, Smith and Chang General Goods, Tribeca Pediatrics and many more.

“We are so pleased to welcome Downtown Co-op to the Hamilton Square family of distinctive retailers,” said Paul Silverman, principal and co-founder of SILVERMAN. “Our savvy residents are already enjoying the benefits of membership, and the store’s concept is also resonating with the greater community because of its attention to local, fresh and affordable products.  You can’t find anything else like it in the area.”

Since 1981, SILVERMAN has been at the heart of Jersey City’s revitalization; rehabilitating historic buildings and sensitively constructing newly designed structures. Brothers Eric Silverman and Paul Silverman attribute their success to a sustained commitment to the community and their focus on developing projects that will contribute to the dynamic neighborhood.

Downtown Co-op’s store hours are Monday through Friday from 10am – 8pm, Saturday from 9am – 8pm and Sunday from 9am – 5pm.  For more information regarding the Downtown Co-op please visit http://www.downtowncoop.com/ or call (201) 855-6767.
