Albany, NY – March 13, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — DHCR’s Executive Deputy Commissioner Brian Lawlor was on hand recently to help launch the construction of a new $15 million, 66-unit affordable housing development for senior citizens in the town of Ulster.
The new housing will be LEED® certified and consist of 52 one-bedroom and 14 two-bedroom affordable units. Rents will be affordable to people with incomes between 30% and 60% of the area median. All units include air conditioning, utilities, trash removal, and discounted rates for cable and internet.
The development is financed through a combination of public and private funding including funding through the NYS Housing Trust Fund, tax credit equity, and NYS Housing Finance Agency bonds.
“DHCR is proud to be part of the effort to make quality, affordable housing available to senior citizens so that they can continue living safely and securely in the towns they call home,” said DHCR Commissioner Deborah VanAmerongen. “Congratulations to Steve Aaron and everyone at Birchez.”
Steve Aaron, Managing Partner of Birchez Associates thanked Commissioner VanAmerongen for DHCR’s efforts to make this development a reality.
“This event proves that – even in the most challenging economic times – by pulling together the public and private sectors, we can continue increasing the supply of housing our senior citizens can afford,” said Aaron.
Other participating in the groundbreaking ceremony included: Congressman Maurice Hinchey, Ulster Town Supervisor Nicky Woerner, Executive VP of NYHomes Marian Zucker, Ulster County Executive Michael Hein, President and CEO of Elant, Inc. Donna McAleer, and Chambers Court resident Frank Fatum.
Aaron also announced that Birchez Associates is partnering with Elant, Inc. to provide on-site medical services as well as personal support to residents of The Birches at Chambers.
Birches at Chambers is expected to be completed in July.
