“As we brace for another hurricane season, many of our communities are still struggling to recover and rebuild from the damage caused by Superstorm Sandy more than two years ago. This federal investment in our pedestrian and transportation infrastructure continues a partnership between local, state, and federal governments and ensures local taxpayers won’t have to shoulder the burden of repairing their community alone,” said Rep. Israel.
The federal grant totals $1,128,599.58 and is a 90% share of the $1,253,999.53 total cost of the project. In response to Superstorm Sandy, FEMA has obligated more than $1.3 billion in Public Assistance disaster relief for Nassau County. These important federal investments are intended to restore damaged structures or facilities to pre-storm condition and reimburse communities for emergency response efforts during and following Superstorm Sandy.
In recognition of National Hurricane Preparedness Week, which falls May 24-30th, Rep. Israel also urged Long Island and Queens residents to create an emergency preparedness plan for their family and loved ones. The 2015 Atlantic hurricane season officially begins on June 1, 2015.
