ENGEL: $4.264 MILLION IN HOUSING GRANTS FOR YONKERS

New York, NY – September 24, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — Congressman Eliot Engel announced the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is awarding $4,264,061 in grant money to Yonkers, to improve housing in the city and expand economic opportunities for low- and moderate-income residents.

The amounts broken down by program are:

· Community Development Block Grants (CDBG)- $3,091,469;

· HOME programfor affordable housing – $958,036;

· Emergency Shelter grants- $214,556.

“This money will help Yonkers to expand and improve housing for people with the greatest need,” said Rep. Engel.

Mayor Michael Spano said, “I want to thank Congressman Engel for his continued efforts in securing the resources needed to assure quality, affordable housing for Yonkers residents.”

The HOME program expands the supply of suitable, affordable housing to low- and very low-income families, and the Emergency Shelter grants will help Yonkers to improve the quality of emergency homeless shelters. The Community Development Block Grants help communities to develop affordable housing and expanded economic opportunities.

Rep. Engel said, “These are still difficult economic times because we still have not recovered from the Great Recession. This federal assistance helps those most in need and who have the least resources. I am pleased to work with Mayor Spano to identify local needs in Yonkers and to assist with these federal grants.”
