NYSERDA Recognizes Four New York City Engineering Firms for Doubling Energy Savings in Multifamily Buildings

Awards Honor Energy Savings Achieved in Existing Multifamily Buildings and New Construction

New York, NY – November 26, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) recognized four engineering firms in New York City for achieving double the required energy savings on projects completed through the Multifamily Performance Program (MPP).

The firms receiving honors are the Association for Energy Affordability (AEA), Power Concepts, Steven Winter Associates and SustainAbility Partners.

Partners in MPP—energy specialists focused on improving multifamily building performance—earned the awards for providing outstanding work on an MPP project. The winning projects maximize energy efficiency to reduce energy consumption, costs and waste in multifamily buildings, while providing a more comfortable, healthy and sustainable environment for residents.

“Congratulations to the winners for leading the industry in New York State to improve energy efficiency in multifamily buildings,” said Tom Barone, acting vice president of Operations and Energy Services, NYSERDA. “As we work together to advance Governor Cuomo’s energy agenda, multifamily buildings provide opportunities to have a major impact on energy use and the environment.”

Energy savings in the multifamily sector complements Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s BuildSmart NY program, an initiative to improve energy efficiency in state buildings to reduce costs and environmental emissions. The target for Build Smart NY is a 20 percent reduction in state energy use intensity over seven years, compared to a 2010/2011 baseline.

Steven Winter Associates earned the Deep Savings Award for New Construction for its project at VIP Hughes Gardens in the Bronx. The firm achieved an impressive savings of 32 percent compared with conventional building practices for new construction. It also earned the Installer Award for New Construction, which recognizes the highest installed savings across an MPP partner’s new construction portfolio. New construction projects by Steven Winter Associates saved 13,498 million BTU in a 10-month period.

AEA and Power Concepts were co-winners for the Deep Savings Award for Existing Buildings in the High-Rise (10+ stories) category. AEA earned this distinction for energy-saving measures implemented at 17-85 215th Street, and Power Concepts earned the award for its project at Hampton House Condominiums. Both firms achieved an energy savings of 28 percent for their respective projects.

Sustainability Partners LLC won in a new award category for 2013 — Customer Satisfaction. This award recognizes the MPP partner with the highest overall customer satisfaction score as measured by a customer survey.

The objective of each multifamily building project participating in MPP is to maximize energy efficiency to lower energy costs while improving the health and comfort of residents. Through the Multifamily Energy Performance Portfolio, owners, condo/co-op boards and developers have access to technical assistance, funding and low-cost financing from NYSERDA to implement energy-efficiency measures.

In addition to the New York City winners, two MPP partners outside New York City were also recognized by NYSERDA: En-Power Group in White Plains and C.J. Brown Energy P.C. in Buffalo.
