Alan Gaynor + Co. Designs Space for Sports Medicine Practice In Columbus Circle Landmark Building

NEW YORK CITY, NY – June 5, 2012 – (RealEstateRama) — Manhattan-based architectural firm Alan Gaynor + Co. has designed an 11,000-square-foot medical facility for Riverside Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine at 1790 Broadway, a landmarked pre-war property. The medical practice is scheduled to occupy its new facility in late June.

AG + Co.’s design consists of 18 examination rooms interspersed with offices, all with an abundance of windows providing views of Columbus Circle and Central Park. Each patient space receives abundant natural light, and smaller spaces are merged together to enable a more open, inviting environment. Non-rectangular areas are modified into a smoothly-flowing set of pathways and workplaces, through which both patients and staff can move and interact fluidly.

The new location consolidates two former Riverside facilities into one expanded space. At the center of the new floor plan are diagnostic rooms (two for x-ray and one for fluoroscopy). All three are large and heavy, with special structural requirements, especially in the x-ray rooms, which require lead-lined walls and doors.

“In 2011, Riverside realized that it needed more space than its then-current Columbus Circle location could provide, but they didn’t want to move far from the convenience of multiple subway lines,” says Michele Boddewyn, AIA, president of AG + Co. “Taking into account both its present and future needs, the practice chose a larger, more ample space in a Beaux Arts landmarked building – one that is known for its impeccable tenant management, pre-war elegance and sweeping park views.

“The true challenge in the project came with maximizing the interior space for a growing medical practice while staying within the boundaries required when working with a landmarked property,” Ms. Boddewyn continues. “In the end, we provided a strong, detailed layout through which our client will be able to adapt to evolving medical technology and provide patients with a warm environment, without forsaking the practice’s unique identity.”

Riverside Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine is a six-physician operation with a highly specific and personal approach to patient care. The practice specializes in the surgical and non-surgical treatment of musculoskeletal conditions, including common and complex injuries and fractures, neck and back problems, arthritis, tendonitis, joint replacement surgery and general orthopaedics.
