— Strike Could Directly Affect Nearly 250,000 New Yorkers —
New York, NY – February 23, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — Apartment building workers in the Bronx will vote today to authorize their bargaining committee to call a strike if one becomes necessary. Failure to reach a new contract by March 15 could trigger a strike of more than 3,000 apartment building workers at over 1,000 residential buildings throughout the borough.
Today’s vote comes on the heels of workers rejecting a contract proposal from the Bronx Realty Advisory Board (BRAB), a real estate industry association representing Bronx building owners.
Contract negotiations between 32BJ SEIU and BRAB have been underway since February 8, and several issues, including health care, remain outstanding. The contract covers building superintendents, janitors, handypersons, porters, firepersons, doormen, elevator operators and garbage handlers
