Washington, DC – July 13, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) and Town of Cheektowaga Supervisor Mary Holtz announced that Cheektowaga will receive $1,045,720 in federal funding through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. This award is in addition to the $273,744 CDBG funding the Town received earlier this year through the federal Recovery Act.
“This federal funding will enhance Cheektowaga neighborhoods and invest in projects that increase economic activity and opportunity within the Town,” said Congressman Higgins.
“Additional funding from the federal government is always welcome news as we continue to partner and plan for needed community development investments,” said Supervisor Holtz.
CDBG funds may be used for a wide range of purposes which include, but are not limited to: assisting businesses carry out economic development and job creation activities; rehabilitation of residential and non-residential structures; construction of public facilities and improvements, such as water and sewer facilities, streets, neighborhood centers, and the conversion of school buildings for eligible purposes; and activities relating to energy conservation and renewable energy resources; and relocation and demolition.
Congressman Higgins also pointed out that this Block Grant will help support continued initiatives along the Cheektowaga border. Last year the City and Town formed the Buffalo/Cheektowaga Revitalization task force which meets regularly to find solutions to mutual problems including: crime, vacant housing, absentee landlords, economic decline and population loss.
