Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced $39.2 million in New NY Broadband Program Round II grants have been awarded to 11 projects in the Capital Region. These awards will provide 32,737 homes and businesses with access to high-speed broadband for the first time, and leverage $9.8 million in private matching funds – bringing the total public-private investment in the Capital Region to $49 million in Round II. Through Rounds I and II, the program has driven a total of more than $65 million in public-private investment in high-speed broadband across the region.

Household Debt Increases Substantially, Approaching Previous Peak

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York today issued its Quarterly Report on Household Debt and Credit, which reported that total household debt increased substantially by $226 billion (a 1.8% increase) to $12.58 trillion during the fourth quarter of 2016. This marked the largest quarterly increase in total household debt since the fourth quarter of 2013, and debt today is now just 0.8% below its peak of $12.68 trillion reached in the third quarter of 2008. Every type of debt increased since the previous quarter, with a 1.6% increase in mortgage debt, 1.9% increase in auto loan balances, a 4.3% increase in credit card balances, and a 2.4% percent increase in student loan balances.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced a $15 million proposal to accelerate the use of renewable heating and cooling technologies in New York to stimulate the clean energy economy. The new policy framework released by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority includes a proposed two-year, $15-million program to provide rebates for the installation of ground-source heat pumps. This plan will support the state’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in New York 40 percent by 2030 from 1990 levels.
