Support for Energy Efficiency Project Helps Crime Lab Reduce Annual Costs by $75,000
New York, NY – March 29, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has recognized Monroe County Public Safety Crime Lab with a High Performance Building Plaque for energy efficiency measures that will cut energy costs by $75,000 annually.
NYSERDA awards High Performance Building Plaques to hospitals, colleges and universities, schools, businesses and other organizations that construct or substantially renovate buildings that perform at least 30 percent above the New York State energy code. Monroe County Public Safety Crime Lab is rated to perform 34 percent above New York State energy code.
Monroe County Public Safety Crime Lab was awarded $148,000 from NYSERDA, which helps to offset the incremental cost of the energy-efficient measures to its lab at Broad Street and Plymouth Avenue in Rochester. Major energy efficiency improvements to the 45,000-square-foot facility include energy-efficient building shell (exterior walls, windows, doors, roof), high-efficiency lighting design with daylight harvesting and occupancy controls to turn lights off when no one is in the space, and an energy- efficient HVAC system that provides heating, cooling and ventilation based on occupancy needs of individual spaces.
The electricity savings of 91,000 kilowatt hours is equivalent to the amount of electricity consumed by 13 single-family homes annually and will be realized by the facility every year for years to come.
“Monroe County is proud that our state-of-the-art Regional Crime Lab is the recipient of NYSERDA’s High Performance Energy Efficiency Award for 2013,” said Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks. “Accolades like the High Performance Energy Efficiency Award demonstrate how Monroe County’s green initiatives continue to set us apart as a premier sustainable and energy-efficient community. We are especially pleased that our LEED-designed Crime Lab is now saving green by going green, since it is achieving significant year-over-year savings for local taxpayers.”
“NYSERDA is pleased to have worked with the Monroe County Public Safety Crime Lab to reduce the lab’s energy use and increase its savings,” said Francis J. Murray Jr., President and CEO, NYSERDA. “Governor Cuomo’s sustainability initiatives highlight the importance of energy efficiency to the environmental and economic well-being of both the state and local communities. The Monroe County Public Safety Lab is leading by example with its investment in energy efficiency.”
Funding for this project is through NYSERDA’s New Construction Program (NCP), which provides technical support to design teams and financial incentives to building owners involved in the construction of new or substantially renovated structures in New York State. NCP is a first-come, first-served program available to commercial, institutional and industrial sector customers of certain utilities. NCP incentives are paid out upon project completion and installation of approved energy efficiency measures is verified. The intent of the program is not only to improve energy efficiency and green building practices, but to effect a permanent transformation in the way buildings are designed and constructed throughout the state.
