Washington, D.C. – July 20, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — Congressman Eliot Engel announced that the city of Mt. Vernon was awarded two grants totaling $2,613,756 from the U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
The two grants awarded to Mt. Vernon are:
- $1,830,491 – Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG)
- $783,265 – HOME Program
Rep. Engel said, “I am pleased to be able to support families in need through these grants. This will help the people in Mt. Vernon most in need of assistance to find more affordable housing and provide them with better economic opportunities. This will also help expand on their revitalization efforts, and provide a boost to the city’s economy during this time of economic hardship.”
The CDBG program distributes grants to states and other municipalities to develop viable urban communities by providing decent housing and a suitable living environment, and by expanding economic opportunities, primarily for low- and moderate-income people. Annual CDBG funds are distributed to communities according to formulas based on population, poverty, pre-1940s housing stock, growth lag and housing overcrowding.
The HOME program helps expand the supply of decent, affordable housing to low- and very low-income families by providing grants to fund housing programs to meet local needs.
