NYSERDA Support for Energy Efficiency Project Helps U.S. Courthouse Reduce Annual Costs by $289,000
New York, NY – May 15, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has awarded the U.S. Courthouse in Buffalo a high performance energy-efficiency plaque for energy-efficiency projects that will cut energy costs by $289,000 annually.
NYSERDA awards High Performance Building Plaques to hospitals, colleges and universities, schools, businesses and other organizations that construct or substantially renovate buildings that perform at least 30 percent above the New York State energy code. The U.S. Courthouse located in Niagara Square is rated to perform 39 percent more efficient than code and is expected to save 1.6 million kilowatt hours annually, which is equivalent to the amount of electricity consumed by 232 single-family homes annually.
The U.S. Courthouse received $111,000 in support from NYSERDA, which helped offset the incremental cost of energy efficiency measures. Major energy efficiency measures include an energy-efficient lighting design with occupancy controls and a Heating,Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system that provides heating, cooling and ventilation based on occupancy needs of individual spaces.
“This NYSERDA award demonstrates GSA’s ongoing commitment to create a sustainable government by building federal facilities that are more energy efficient and, as a result, save tax dollars,” said Denise L. Pease, Regional Administrator, GSA Northeast and Caribbean Region.“Sustainability is a GSA priority and we continue to seek innovative technologies and work with partner agencies and the private sector to identify best practices that help further these efforts.”
“NYSERDA congratulates the U.S. General Services Administration for its commitment to achieving such impressive energy savings at the U.S. Courthouse in Buffalo,” said Francis J. Murray Jr., President and CEO, NYSERDA. “Governor Cuomo’s continued investment in model energy efficiency projects like this one demonstrates that public buildings provide great opportunities to achieve energy reduction and savings.”
Funding for this project is through NYSERDA’s New Construction Program (NCP), which provides technical support to design teams and financial incentives to building owners involved in the construction of new or substantially renovated structures in New York State. NCP is a first-come, first-served program available to commercial, institutional and industrial sector customers of certain utilities. NCP incentives are paid out upon project completion and installation of approved energy efficiency measures is verified. The intent of the program is not only to improve energy efficiency and green building practices, but to effect a permanent transformation in the way buildings are designed and constructed throughout the state.
