Vacant Lot in Bed-Stuy Revitalized with Affordable Housing
Albany, NY – September 17, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — DHCR Commissioner Deborah VanAmerongen recently joined elected officials and community leaders at 1825 Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood to celebrate the opening of Atlantic Avenue Apartments. The once blighted block is being revitalized thanks to the seven story building with 149 units of ENERGY STAR-rated affordable housing.
DHCR provided $3 million for the development, which will have gross rents ranging from $196 to $1,430 a month. The 30 three-bedroom, 74 two-bedroom, 34 one-bedroom, and 12 studio apartments reserved for mentally disabled tenants, will help alleviate the housing needs of this neighborhood.
The Atlantic Avenue Apartments will also have its own not-for-profit service provider, the Brooklyn Bureau of Community Service, which will run the onsite Atlantic Early Childhood Center. This community daycare and early education center is unique, covering 6,000 square feet of community space, and is complete with child-sized bathrooms.
In addition, the service provider will take placement referrals from the New York State Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (OMRDD) who will provide tenant-based rental subsidies.
Residents will enjoy large, bright apartments; energy efficient fixtures and appliances, a community room and kitchen for gatherings, laundry room, children’s playground, off-street parking and a landscaped patio and seating area.
Funding for this project was provided by the New York State Low-Income Housing Credit Program, New York City Housing Development Corp., New York City Housing Preservation and Development Trust Fund, tax credits and deferred developer fees.
DHCR provided funds for the construction of Atlantic Avenue Apartments during its 2006 Unified Funding Round. For more information on Unified Funding contact your local DHCR Regional Office.
