Nursing Assistant Admits Throwing Chicken Bone At Patient, Slamming Her Wheelchair Into A Door
Schneiderman: We Will Aggressively Prosecute Anyone Who Mistreats Most Vulnerable Members Of Our Society
ROCHESTER – February 28, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman announced today the arrest of Groven Glenn, a certified nurse aide, for assaulting an 83-year-old female resident at Park Ridge Living Center nursing home in the Town of Greece. Glenn was charged with one felony count of Endangering the Welfare of a Vulnerable Elderly Person or an Incompetent or Physically Disabled Person in the Second Degree and related misdemeanors after a surveillance video captured him viciously throwing a chicken bone at the resident and slamming her wheelchair into the door of her room. If convicted, Glenn faces 1 1/3 to 4 years in prison.
“When a family entrusts a loved one to the care of a nursing home, they expect courtesy, kindness and professionalism from those assigned to care for that person,” Attorney General Schneiderman said. “Today’s charges reflect my commitment to protecting our most vulnerable citizens, including the elderly and the disabled, from abusive caregivers. We will continue to aggressively prosecute anyone who abuses seniors in their care.”
According to the felony complaint, on November 5, 2012, Groven Glenn was assigned to provide care to a resident identified by authorities as “W.G.” Sometime around 6:00pm, Glenn became angry at W.G. and viciously threw a chicken bone at the resident in response to W.G. tossing some napkins in Glenn’s direction moments earlier. Glenn briskly walked around to W.G.’s side of the table, unlocked her wheelchair, and forcefully whisked her away toward her room. He then slammed W.G. and her wheelchair into the door to W.G.’s room causing physical injury.
The Rochester Regional Office of the New York State Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit (MFCU) began investigating this case when it received a referral from the Department of Health alleging that Glenn had thrown food at and assaulted an elderly and disabled resident in his care.
The entire incident is captured on the nursing home’s surveillance video. Glenn later acknowledged some of his conduct, stating: “I was pissed, got angry and couldn’t control myself.”
Attorney General Schneiderman thanks the Greece Police Department and Sergeant Anthony Waltermyer for their assistance in this investigation.
The investigation and prosecution of this case is being conducted by Rochester MFCU Regional Director Catherine Wagner and Senior Investigator Douglas Hinchey of the Rochester MFCU, under the supervision of Supervising Investigator William Falk, Special Deputy Attorney General Monica Hickey-Martin and Executive Deputy Attorney General for Criminal Justice Kelly Donovan.
The charges against Glenn are accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.
