Congressman Engel Announces Federal Grant Money for WestCOP

Will help fund programs in Yonkers, Mt. Vernon, New Rochelle

Westchester, NY – (RealEstateRama) — Congressman Eliot L. Engel, a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, has announced the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has awarded federal grant money to Westchester Community Opportunity Program, Inc. (WestCOP) under the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program to help low-income veteran families get and keep their own homes. The total allocation of $1,935,797 to WestCOP, which operates throughout the Lower Hudson Valley, will help hundreds of low-income veteran families in Yonkers, Mt. Vernon, and New Rochelle who are permanently housed or transitioning to permanent housing.

“The sacrifices our veterans have made in service to their country cannot be overstated. They are heroes who deserve our collective national support,” Congressman Engel said. “The VA has allocated hundreds of millions of dollars to helping veterans deal with homelessness through their ‘Housing First Strategy’, and according to VA statistics, since 2010, that strategy has helped cut Veteran Homelessness nearly in half.

“But we can do more. The funding allocated to WestCOP will provide vital support to veteran families in Yonkers, Mt. Vernon, New Rochelle and beyond. As Congressman, I will continue to do all that I can to support critical federal funding for programs that support and protect our veterans.”
