ENGEL ANNOUNCES $556,106 HOMELESS GRANT FOR ROCKLAND

Washington, DC – March 19, 2012 – (RealEstateRama) — Rockland County’s Office of Community Development was awarded a $556,106 Continuum of Care Homeless Assistance grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development to provide assistance to homeless persons, including transitional housing, permanent housing plus supportive services Congressman Eliot Engel announced.

The grant will assist disabled individuals and families, currently living in emergency shelters or transitional housing units, move to permanent housing apartments.

Rep. Engel said the Continuum of Caregrants provide permanent and transitional housing to homeless persons as well as job training, health care, mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment and child care. “These grants are awarded competitively to local programs to meet the needs of their homeless clients,” Rep.Engel said. “The grants fund a wide variety of programs from street outreach and assessment programs to transitional and permanent housing for homeless persons and families.

“This money will help these people to get back on their feet and become productive members of society.”

According to HUD, homelessness in more than 3,000 cities and counties across the country declined 2.1 percent between 2010 and 2011 with a hugely significant 12 percent drop among homeless veterans.
