Major Commercial Movers, Labor Institutions Announce “Moving Forward” Trade Group to Protect NY Businesses, Workers

NY Building & Construction Trades Council: “Unscrupulous moving companies that mistreat workers and put commercial clients at risk must be stopped.”

New York, NY – February 6, 2012 – (RealEstateRama) — Fed up with companies and organizations that are lowering standards for quality of work and treatment of workers in the commercial moving industry, a group of the area’s largest and most well-respected movers joined together today with the Greater New York Building and Construction Trades Council to announce the better business trade group “Moving Forward”.

“Moving Forward is dedicated to providing an honest, secure and quality move at a fair price,” said Moving Forward co-chair Dennis Farrell of Central Moving and Storage. “We are also intent on protecting clients from unscrupulous behavior in our industry, and ensuring the movers who handle and transport your cargo are well-compensated, and care about your move.”

“Unfortunately, some moving companies apparently do not care about the welfare of workers or the quality of their service, and, as a result, have made choosing a mover risky for New York’s businesses,” said Moving Forward co-chair Jason Ide, President of Teamsters Local 814. “We’re supported by the AFL-CIO and the Greater New York Building and Construction Trades Council because we certify that our companies will always be responsible to you, and the industry as well.”

“Unscrupulous moving companies that mistreat workers and put commercial clients at risk must be stopped,” said Greater New York Building and Construction Trades Council President Gary LaBarbera. “Bad companies and even rogue unions are putting New York’s businesses and workers at risk. Our brothers and sisters in labor have worked too hard to create high standards for our work and pay. We support Moving Forward and its labor partner Teamsters Local 814, the only movers union recognized by the Greater New York Building and Construction Trades Council.”

The announcement today also marked the launch of MovingForwardNY.com, the group’s Web site. Moving Forward will use the site and resources to actively educate current and potential clients, building managers and owners, and other members of the moving industry about the hidden costs of hiring companies that do not use quality labor. Each of the Moving Forward member companies are vetted for, and are committed to, a code of conduct that includes training and drug testing for workers, harmonious labor relations, and honest treatment of clients.

Moving Forward’s membership companies include Capital Moving and Storage, Central Moving and Storage, Certified Moving and Storage, Globe Storage and Moving, and Clancy Cullen.
