WHITE PLAINS – May 21, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — The New York Power Authority (NYPA) trustees have approved a $2.9 million contract for the construction and relocation of the winter mooring operations of NYPA’s ice boom tugboats and barge to a new area within the First Buffalo Marina.
NYPA purchased the marina in 2008 to serve as a winter docking site for its vessels involved in the installation, maintenance, and removal of the ice boom. The ice boom spans the mouth of the Niagara River at Lake Erie to reduce the amount of ice that would otherwise flow from the lake into the river. The marina is also open for recreational boats during the summer with on-land storage for boats during the winter.
The contract award, to Nichols Long & Moore Construction Corp. of Lancaster, will enable NYPA to move the docking location from the center of the marina to a 1.5 acre parcel at the extreme northern end of the 15.5-acre property. That will allow the NYPA vessels to be closer to the ice boom and to an area that experiences less severe ice conditions.
“Moving the vessels closer to the ice boom is a practical move that supports the efficient operation of the Niagara Power Plant,” said Harry Francois, NYPA regional manager for western New York. “We are happy to partner with a regional business to perform the work and contribute to the local economy.”
The relocation work will include the installation of a new 250-foot sea wall, construction of a new equipment storage building and a new access road. The work is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
