BLENHEIM – January 21, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — GILBOA—Workers put finishing touches Jan. 14 on a new communications tower at the New York Power Authority’s Blenheim-Gilboa Power Project that will boost cellphone service in Schoharie County. The 260-foot tower, near the project’s upper reservoir, replaces a smaller one used to communicate equipment readings to the hydroelectric plant below. It is the centerpiece of an agreement between NYPA and Verizon to improve cellular communications along the Route 30 corridor, between the towns of Middleburgh and Grand Gorge.
Under the agreement, announced last September, Verizon is outfitting three towers with cellphone transceiver equipment, including two existing towers on Dave Brown Mountain Road in Blenheim and another one on Clauverwie Road in the hamlet of Breakabeen. NYPA is committing $3.5 million for these improvements, which will boost cellphone coverage in the area and support emergency response efforts. The project is expected to be completed this summer.
