Demonstrations will advance the Reforming the Energy Vision Strategy to Build a Clean, Resilient and Affordable Energy System for all New Yorkers
New York – December 30, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — NYSERDA Seeks Proposals for Power Generation Projects Leading to Cleaner Energy Production and Reductions in Greenhouse Gases Demonstrations will advance the Reforming the Energy Vision Strategy to Build a Clean, Resilient and Affordable Energy System for all New Yorkers
The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) announced today that the next program offering of the Competitive Greenhouse Gas Reduction Program is now open. This program seeks proposals for projects that demonstrate technologies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions from New York’s power sector beyond reductions expected from compliance with existing regulations.
The Competitive Greenhouse Gas Reduction Program aims to help power generators reduce emissions through technology solutions that can then be replicated across the State. These projects are expected to produce significant declines in greenhouse gas emissions, advancing Governor Cuomo’s Reforming the Energy Vision strategy, which calls for a 40 percent decline in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 from 1990 levels. NYSERDA and other state agencies are committed to working with power plants to help them implement projects to achieve these goals.
Chairman of Energy and Finance for New York Richard Kauffman said, “As part of Reforming the Energy Vision, supporting power producers’ efforts to develop and deploy clean technologies into New York’s energy infrastructure will help us reach our ambitious emissions reduction goals and create a healthier and cleaner environment for all New Yorkers.”
NYSERDA President and CEO John B. Rhodes said, “New York State, under Governor Cuomo’s leadership, is addressing climate change with strategies that address all sectors of the economy. The Competitive Greenhouse Gas Reduction Program focuses directly on power producers and will have an important and beneficial impact on New York’s carbon footprint.”
Examples of technologies eligible under this program offering include advanced controls for power plants, boiler controls, advanced burners, turbine retrofits, waste-heat recovery, or in-facility electrical load reduction and efficiency improvements. Under-utilized technologies, as well as proven new and advanced technologies, are encouraged.
Power plant proposals must demonstrate sustained greenhouse gas reductions upon completion of the project. Projects are evaluated against a set of criteria that includes total tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) reduced, cost per ton of CO2 reduced, duration of CO2 reduction and technical merit/replicability of the project. Results will be disseminated among the power generation sector in New York State for possible replication.
This program offers $13.5 million and there is no cap on funding per project; however, cost-sharing by the power generator is required. A portion of NYSERDA funding will be in the form of performance payments for measurable and verifiable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions over a specified performance period.
The deadline for proposals is March 31, 2016. For more information, visit http://www.nyserda.ny.gov/GHGreduction.
About Reforming the Energy Vision
Under Governor Cuomo’s Reforming the Energy Vision (REV), New York State is spurring clean energy innovation and attracting new investment to build a cleaner, more resilient and affordable energy system for all New Yorkers. REV encompasses groundbreaking regulatory reform to integrate clean energy into the core of our power grid, redesigned programs and strategies to unlock private capital, and active leadership in deploying innovative energy solutions across the State’s own public facilities and operations. REV will enable a dynamic, clean energy economy operating at a scale that will stimulate opportunities for communities across the state to create jobs and drive local economic growth, while protecting our environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants.
Successful initiatives already launched as part of REV include NY Sun, NY Green Bank, NY Prize, K-Solar, and a commitment to improve energy affordability for low-income communities.
