Project Will Provide Housing, Services to Address Mental Health and Substance Abuse Issues
New York – October 2, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — The New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) today announced that $7.9 million is being awarded to The Rescue Mission Alliance of Syracuse to construct 128 units of permanent supportive housing in Onondaga County. The announcement was made during the grand opening of the Rescue Mission’s 183-bed homeless shelter, which was constructed with a $3.4 million grant from OTDA, and highlighted as part of Governor Cuomo’s “Capital for a Day” in Central New York.
“These projects will provide tremendously important resources for people experiencing homelessness in Syracuse. It will allow the Rescue Mission to expand its life-changing work by increasing its capacity to serve more people,” said OTDA Commissioner Samuel D. Roberts. “The supportive housing that will be constructed will not only provide a safe and stable place to live, but ensure residents have access to support services they need to achieve independence and self-reliance.”
The $7.9 million from the Homeless Housing and Assistance Program (HHAP) will help construct a $16.7 million project that involves the rehabilitation and expansion of an existing building to develop 128 permanent supportive housing units, including 65 units for homeless adults with mental health and/or substance abuse issues. Supportive services will include job readiness, medical screening, referrals, and case management.
The project also includes the preservation of a 59-bed adult home licensed by the New York State Department of Health, while adding one additional bed.
The announcement came at the opening of the Rescue Mission’s new 183-bed emergency shelter, which was supported with $3.4 million from HHAP.
HHAP provides capital funding to develop housing for various special-needs populations designed to help families and individuals move out of homelessness and poverty, toward the highest level of independence possible.
These projects are among several recent HHAP investments in Central New York, including:
Auburn Housing Authority, Cayuga County: $6.4 million for new construction of 28 units of permanent and transitional housing for homeless families. Construction began in August.
Oswego County Opportunities, Oswego County: $496,000 for rehabilitation of 6 units/8 beds of transitional housing for homeless youth. The project was completed in May.
Madison County Community Action Program, Madison County: $1 million for new construction of four units of permanent housing for homeless families. Construction began in May.
