Statement of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg
New Yorkers, NY – June 21, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — “New Yorkers whose homes were damaged by Hurricane Sandy will receive additional aid this fall through legislation passed today in Albany. The bill – which our Administration proposed this Legislative session – authorizes the City to reimburse property tax payers whose homes were significantly damaged by up to two-thirds of the total bill paid for the 2013 Fiscal Year. This is the latest relief effort our Administration has led to assist homeowners impacted by the hurricane. Last month, we announced a decrease in property taxes due for the next Fiscal Year through reassessments of Sandy-damaged properties and across-the-board reductions in Market Values for some of the hardest hit neighborhoods. The legislation passed today is a big step forward in our work to help New Yorkers recover from the storm, and I want to thank Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Senator Andrew Lanza for their leadership to ensure passage of this legislation.”
Joint Statement by City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn, Finance Chair Domenic M. Recchia, Jr. and Council Members James Oddo and Vincent Ignizio:
“After Hurricane Sandy devastated New York City Neighborhoods from Tottenville to the Rockaways to Red Hook, we promised all New Yorkers that we would help them in every way possible. This property tax rebate for homeowners most impacted by Sandy is both the right thing to do and no-brainer legislation because no one should have to pay the full property tax amount for a home or business that suffered substantial damage in the storm. This is an easy and direct way to get cash directly into the hands of some of the hardest hit New Yorkers and marks another small step the City and State have taken that will make a big difference in the lives of residents on the long road to recovery. We want to thank the Bloomberg administration for working with the Council to pursue rebate and Assembly Speaker Silver, Senate Co-Majority Leaders Skelos and Klein and for ensuring this legislation passed and for helping to ease the New York City post-Sandy recovery process.”
