Office for the Aging and Westchester Residential Opportunities (WRO) to Host Informational Session for Volunteers Tuesday, August 21
YONKERS, NY – August 10, 2012 – (RealEstateRama) — Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano is calling upon volunteers in Yonkers and the Westchester County area to assist seniors with foreclosure prevention. Yonkers Office for the Aging and Westchester Residential Opportunities (WRO) will host an informational session for volunteers Tuesday, August 21 from 2pm to 3:30pm at the Chema Center at 430 Riverdale Avenue in Yonkers to discuss the foreclosure prevention outreach.
“This is a great opportunity for our residents to assist and support some of our older adults who struggle with the sometimes overwhelming business of financing their homes,” said Mayor Spano. “I thank Office for the Aging and WRO for taking the initiative in recruiting volunteers and I encourage those who are looking for ways to donate their time to assist with this ever important project.”
Foreclosure rates among seniors have been on the rise in Yonkers. According to the Westchester County Clerk’s Office, in 2011, approximately 60% of the residential liens in the City of Yonkers were sold on properties where at least one of the homeowners were 65 years of age or older.
Mayor Spano added, “It is apparent that foreclosures among our aging residents are a growing problem. We need to be proactive in educating our seniors and their families on how this can be prevented and to better plan for their golden years.”
The program will be facilitated with the additional support of CUNY Hunter College graduate students who will assist with the volunteer outreach.
