N.Y. POWER AUTHORITY, MTA COLLABORATE ON SUMMER POWER CUTS

NEW YORK – July 30, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — The New York Power Authority and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said today they will activate a program to reduce electricity use in response to anticipated higher energy demand on hot and humid days.

Mass transit service will not be affected.

NYPA’s Peak Reduction Program, which can be operated for up to 15 days between June 1 and Sept. 30, commits the MTA to lower electricity use at 28 MTA New York City Transit bus depots, all MTA NYCT substations, and one rail service yard during the highest-demand days to help ensure reliable supplies of electricity.

The program was activated today for the first time this summer. The MTA is one of the city’s largest users of electricity. Under the Peak Reduction Program, the MTA will curtail using nearly 13.6 megawatts (MW) of electricity from 12 p.m.-6 p.m. (One megawatt is enough electricity to meet the power needs of 800 to 1,000 typical homes). In return, NYPA will pay the MTA $25 per kilowatt reduced.

“The MTA’s efforts will make a substantial contribution toward reducing peak load when the margins between available generating capacity and electricity use narrow the most,” said Gil C. Quiniones, NYPA president and chief executive officer. “NYPA will work closely with the MTA to cut back on nonessential energy use during periods of extreme heat.”

“The MTA is pleased to be able to work with NYPA to help reduce peak loads during the increasingly challenging summer days,” said Thomas F. Prendergast, MTA chairman and chief executive officer. “We are committed to doing everything we can to help ensure that people in New York City have reliable access to the electricity they require for their homes and businesses while serving the daily transportation needs of millions of our customers.”
