Public Advocate de Blasio to Call for End to Co-op City Lockout, Offer Guidance to Affected Tenants

Bronx, NY – June 3, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — Public Advocate Bill de Blasio will join locked-out Co-op City workers, tenants and union officials today, Thursday June 3, to call on RiverBay Corporation to end the lockout of members of 32BJ of the Service Employees International Union. The lockout, which began on Tuesday at 12:01 a.m., affects more than 500 workers and 55,000 tenants.

De Blasio will also outline the services the city will provide for tenants affected by the lockout and the possibility that Co-op City residents are eligible for reduced rents and co-op fees.

Co-Op City apartment building workers were locked-out by their employers RiverBay Corporation on Tuesday, effectively preventing them from performing their jobs, as their contract expired with Riverbay. The contract, which expired at 12:01am Tuesday, covers the 500 porters, handymen, maintenance men, garbage attendants and groundskeepers who maintain the massive complex that is home to 55,000 New Yorkers.
