Support the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day and ‘Buy Green to Save Green’

Albany, NY – April 20, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority is encouraging New Yorkers to buy green to save green this Earth Day. New York’s Great Appliance Swap Out, which has provided nearly $13.6 million to help more than 125,000 New Yorkers reduce their energy costs, has $3.2 million dollars available for New York residents who want to replace their old, inefficient appliances with new, energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly models.

Consumers can receive rebates as high as $555 for purchasing high efficiency refrigerators, freezers, clothes washers and dishwashers. Funds are provided through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).  Remaining funds are tracked on www.NYApplianceSwapOut.com, which features a real-time counter of current balances.  All of the funding will be allocated to consumers before the end of the year.

“New Yorkers can honor Earth Day well past April 22nd by participating in the Great Appliance Swap Out,” said Francis J. Murray, Jr., President and CEO of NYSERDA. “This program gives consumers the opportunity to replace their old, inefficient appliances with energy-efficient models that will help reduce our carbon footprint, all with the added benefit of a cash rebate. High efficiency appliances conserve energy, lower energy costs, and lessen the impact energy can have on the environment.”

Coupled with the rebates available under New York’s Great Appliance Swap Out, program participants can also realize additional savings through promotions being offered by several retailers and manufacturers to coincide with Earth Day. These promotions, which can be used in conjunction with the program, include significant discounts on eligible appliances, special financing, and installation allowances.

The program requires consumers to replace old appliances, and encourages recycling by offering a larger rebate to consumers who recycle their discarded appliances. Funds are reserved for consumers who have purchased qualified appliances after they have submitted an application either online at www.NYApplianceSwapOut.com or through the toll-free hotline, 1-877- NY-SMART (877-697-6278). However, funds are not paid until after consumers mail in documentation of proof of purchase and, if applicable, recycling.

Guidelines for the program can be found at www.NYApplianceSwapOut.com
